Burnham’s ally Louise Haigh admitted she was running, saying the two men were “very good friends” who could work well together. This won’t last long. The two would fall quickly. Miliband has no patience for people who disagree with him and is ready to stab them in the back if it suits him. His brother David Miliband discovered this. So is boss Sir Keir Starmer. If Burnham is reckless enough to make Miliband the most powerful man in his government, he should watch his back. Actually, we all experienced it.
Energy minister Ed Miliband is creating a disaster. The net zero campaign will cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of pounds, empty Britain’s industrial base and increase household energy bills, making him a laughing stock for his outrageous lie that it saves them £300. He is also overseeing the destruction of tens of thousands of oil and gas jobs in the North Sea, while the 600,000 green jobs he dreams of have yet to emerge. Climate change is real. But Miliband’s stance will not solve the problem.
I read a devastating critique of his approach by Oxford economist Dieter Helm, one of Britain’s leading energy experts and a former government adviser. Helm is not a climate skeptic. It has been argued for decades that serious action should be taken against climate change. His complaint is that Miliband has chosen the wrong policies at great cost to you.
Helm has previously branded Ed Miliband for “delusions” about the 2030 clean power target. He argued that it was not economically viable to try to cut household energy bills while also trying to decarbonise the UK’s electricity system by 2030. According to Helm, neither of these two promises can be true. And he is not the only one criticizing Miliband’s fantasies.
Helm returned to the attack on June 3 this year with a remarkable article: Energy Cost and What to Do About It. It never received the attention it deserved. I’m emphasizing this now because Burnham is choosing her chancellor and someone in Number 10 needs to read this before it’s too late.
Helm’s basic argument is brutal. Miliband keeps telling us renewable electricity is cheap. Not. He talks about the cost of producing wind and solar power, but ignores the much bigger bill for backup power when the wind isn’t blowing, storage, balancing the grid, new poles, transmission networks, and all the extra infrastructure needed to keep the lights on. Consumers pay the total system cost. Miliband is deceiving us in another way.
Britain has one of the highest industrial electricity prices in the developed world, making it impossible for manufacturers to compete and move industry and jobs overseas, Helm says. Closing British factories to import the same products from coal-burning countries does not reduce global emissions. It just exports jobs without doing anything to solve the climate crisis.
Miliband has become obsessed with meeting domestic carbon targets while ignoring affordability, competitiveness and energy security. He thinks we are a model for other countries to follow. Instead, we are a solemn warning.
Helm launched a devastating attack. This not only reveals the flaws in Miliband’s policies, but also the hare-brained fanaticism behind them. He brightens the mood of the country while refusing to acknowledge the true cost of what he has done. He has a reputation for getting things done. Because he never lets reality get in his way.
No matter what Louise Haigh says, Burnham won’t control her. Miliband will go his own way and the country will pay the price. This shouldn’t happen. Burnham needs to wake up now. He doesn’t listen to me. But he needs to listen to the experts. Helm issued a dire warning about what would happen if Miliband gains even more power. Voters rejected this lunatic when he served as Labor leader in 2015. Now he sneaked in through the back door. Disaster awaits.
