Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has accepted a proposal to pilot the country’s largest Geothermal Energy Technology (GET) project in the tourism sector of Andhra Pradesh (AP).
“As part of this, EESL will set up two facilities in Araku Valley and Visakhapatnam,” according to the official statement.
The project is in line with the Central Government’s vision of accelerating economic development through cutting-edge clean technologies.
The decision to set up the pilot project in AP was taken after detailed consultations by EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit with Ajay Jain, Special Chief Secretary (Housing and Tourism), Government of Andhra Pradesh, and AP Tourism Development Corporation MD K. Amrapali.
Geothermal energy utilizes constant temperatures beneath the earth’s surface to provide environmentally friendly heating and cooling. At a depth of up to eight metres, the ground temperature remains constant throughout the year, making geothermal systems both highly efficient and reliable.
Technologies such as ground air tunnel systems and ground source heat pumps help maintain comfortable indoor environments in buildings while greatly reducing energy consumption.
These systems reduce electricity use by approximately 50%, require minimal maintenance and provide improved standards of comfort for tourists while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The introduction of GET aims not only to improve tourist facilities, but also to demonstrate how tourism infrastructure powered by clean energy can be a catalyst for sustainable economic growth.
The GET project will contribute to improving living standards in tourism centers, provide significant operational savings to tourism businesses and create a scalable model that can be copied across the country.
“This shows how environmental leadership and tourism excellence can walk hand in hand, driving clean growth, creating new economic opportunities and playing a vital role in India’s fight against climate change,” an EESL spokesperson said.
