JD Vance Defends Conversion Remarks, Calls Backlash Disgusting

US Vice President J.D. Vance has defended his previous statement that he hoped his wife, Usha Vance, who is Hindu, would become a Christian like him, and maintained that she “is not a Christian and has no intention of converting.”

The controversy erupted after Vance made comments at a Turning Point USA event in Mississippi where he was asked if his wife would “come to Jesus.” Answering the question, Vance said that he hoped to embrace Christianity one day, which sparked harsh reactions on social media. Critics accused him of belittling his wife’s Hindu beliefs and seeking approval at the expense of her faith.

Following the backlash, Vance approached X to deliver a strong rebuttal. Reacting to users who accused him of “throwing his wife’s religion under the bus”, he wrote: “What a disgusting comment and this is not the only comment along these lines.” He said the criticism reflected “anti-Christian bigotry” and misrepresented his statements.

Vance clarified that his words were not intended to undermine his wife’s beliefs. Emphasizing that faith is a matter of “God-given free will,” he said he would never pressure his wife to convert. The US Vice President praised Usha for encouraging him to reconnect with the Christian faith, describing her as a major influence on his spiritual journey.

Responding to criticism from Canadian journalist and Rebel News publisher Ezra Levant, Vance said that despite their different beliefs, his marriage to Usha was built on “mutual respect, trust and understanding”. He reiterated that although he hoped for spiritual harmony, he fully respected his wife’s Hindu faith.

Vance’s words and subsequent statements sparked new debates in the United States about religion, interfaith relations, and personal faith in public life.
