Residents told ‘keep doors and windows closed’ as huge fire turns sky ‘orange’ | UK | News

Residents have been asked to keep their doors and windows closed following a major fire at a commercial unit in Shaw. Firefighters were called to Mossgate Road just before 5pm on Tuesday, February 17.

Firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) responded to reports of a fire in a large barn measuring approximately 20 x 30 metres. Harrowing images taken from the scene show a tongue of flame rising from the barn into the dark sky.

The fire service wrote on social media just before 7.30pm: “Our crews are currently battling a fire at a commercial unit on Mossgate Road in Shaw. Please avoid the area and close your doors and windows if you live nearby.”

GMFRS later released a statement providing further information about the incident.

It read: “On Tuesday, February 17, just before 5pm, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a building on Mossgate Road in Shaw. The fire involved a barn approximately twenty by thirty metres. Firefighters used four hose reels to extinguish the fire. Crews remain at the scene.”

One resident claimed he heard “animals were in distress” and was concerned about large numbers of emergency crews going “up and down” nearby roads.

To talk Manchester Evening NewsThe local resident said: “We first noticed this when we were outside around 5pm and could hear explosions. The sound of distressed animals is terrifying.”

Speaking at around 8.30pm, officials added: “We can still see the fire or the orange glow. It’s still burning. I hope no one is injured.”
