Gurugram has become the first city in India to introduce a QR code-based kiosk for digital payment of traffic challans, a facility that aims to make the challan payment process faster and simpler.
The kiosk, jointly developed by Gurugram police and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), was installed at Ambience Mall and was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan on Saturday.
“For the first time in the country, traffic challan payments can be made through QR code-based kiosk machines. This facility will be extremely useful for shoppers visiting a busy place like Ambience Mall,” Mr. Mohan said.
Established as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the kiosk allows drivers to check and pay their outstanding receivables by entering their vehicle number and scanning the QR code. However, payments for those pending in court or more than 90 days overdue cannot be made through the machine.
After assessing the success of this pilot project, Mr. Mohan said similar kiosks will soon be installed at other high footfall places in the city. “This initiative will not only ease the workload of traffic police but also increase the convenience of citizens through digital technology,” he added.
The trial run of video-based emergency call points was also conducted by Police Commissioner Vikas Arora and Mr. Mohan earlier this month. These emergency call points will connect to 112 and the Police Commissioner Control Room and will operate around the clock. Each unit will be equipped with beacons for visibility and will allow citizens to connect via video call to report emergencies or request assistance with the push of a button.
