‘Embarrassed:’ Premier Jacinta Allan’s husband caught drink driving after rear ending another vehicle in Bendigo

Premier Jacinta Allan said she was “deeply ashamed” her husband was caught drink driving after rear-ending another vehicle in Bendigo.

Yorick Piper crashed into another car while heading to a supermarket at the intersection of Spring Gully Rd and Carpenter St on Thursday morning.

Mr Piper scored 0.05 on a roadside breath test, was fined and lost his licence.

“Unfortunately, Yorick rear-ended the vehicle in front of him as he was about to stop,” he told the media.

“Both he and the other driver were uninjured and as it was a minor collision both drivers shared details, shared information, exchanged details after stopping and both continued on their way.

“My husband stated that he would take responsibility for any damage; there was very, very minor damage to the rear of the vehicle, there was a slight dent in the rear of the vehicle.

“We made it clear that we would personally cover the cost of the repairs.”

Ms Allan was contacted for comment and previously told the media they had celebrated their son’s birthday in a pub the night before and drugs may have contributed to the incident.

“As a result of the medication from the previous night mixed with alcohol, he should not have been driving the next morning,” he said.

“He understands that, I understand that, and we’re both really sorry about that.

“We are also shocked, deeply ashamed. He is physically fine from yesterday’s incident, but yes, we are embarrassed, we are in shock and we are truly sorry for what happened here.”

“Because street driving and road trauma are incredibly serious, and there will be road trauma victims who hear about this today and reflect on their own experiences, and I’m truly sorry for that.”

The couple reportedly donated $1,000 to the Amber Society, a charity that supports victims of road trauma.

“The lesson is, don’t get behind the wheel,” he said.

“This can happen to our family, it can happen to any family.

“Road trauma victims deserve us to be mindful and mindful of both our consumption and how any medication taken may have an impact.”
