Dame Emily Thornberry has warned that Britain is “complacent” in the fight against disinformation while countries are “seeking to undermine our democracies” in a report by a committee she chairs that called on the government to give greater priority to tackling disinformation abroad.

The Foreign Affairs Committee report also called for the establishment of a central National Disinformation Center after examining countries such as Russia, China and Iran and analyzing threats by region.

Dame Emily told Independent Europe has two conflicts to resolve: Russia’s invasion of Europe and countries “trying to undermine our democracies.”

“These patterns of behavior are actually things that we recognize are happening in the UK as well. We think it’s something that only affects Eastern Europe. It doesn’t.”
