Wild footage captures massive fireball in Western Sydney
Wild footage captured the moment a massive fireball exploded in western Sydney, sending flames shooting up to 150 meters into the sky, sending fist-sized blocks of concrete and a chemical tank into the air.
More than 200 firefighters were called to the blaze on Saturday evening as dozens of them fled fist-sized concrete blocks raining down on them.
The inferno broke out in a fire at a waste facility in North St Marys, in Sydney’s west.
Holes were opened in neighboring buildings and two firefighters suffered minor injuries to their hands.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman described it as “one of the biggest fires” western Sydney has seen in years.
Aerial platforms were brought in to attack the fire from above and more than 50 units participated in the assistance.
Hazardous materials teams and the Environmental Protection Directorate also arrived at the scene.
While the fire is expected to be extinguished for most of Sunday, locals have been asked to stay away and close windows, doors and vents.
“NSW Fire and Rescue is working to extinguish the fire, which is expected to remain active for an extended period,” a NSW Police spokesman said.
“The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.”
A 200-meter exclusion zone was established.
“Anyone with information regarding this matter or who has dashcam/mobile phone footage at the time is asked to contact Penrith Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” a police spokesman said.
