England in New Zealand: Harry Brook century in vain as Joe Root, Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith fall cheaply

Brook spent two weeks in New Zealand while Root, Smith and fellow opener Ben Duckett were out for the first time in more than six weeks.

The remaining two matches of this series and a warm-up in Australia will be their only opportunity to find form ahead of the first Test on November 21.

Getting four runs combined for three players who are crucial to England’s hopes is clearly not ideal, but significant credit must be given to New Zealand’s new bowlers.

Henry started the match with a delivery that went significantly backwards to tip Smith through the wicket, and he barely gave up his accuracy throughout the opening spell of eight overs.

Returning to figures of 4-41 in his second ODI, Zak Foulkes was hugely impressive, finding seam action of 0.96 plus swing of 1.99 in the first 10 overs; on this ground, a significant jump from the recent average of 0.89 and 1.41 respectively.

Duckett stole a Foulkes ball around goal at an angle before clearing away and Root was hit by a looper, though not full enough for his thunderous drive.

Perhaps the 23-year-old’s best delivery was down to Jacob Bethell.

The left-hander looked to take another tackle from Foulkes downfield but was bowled when the ball popped out late and passed his outside edge.

Bethell was left helpless as he tried to put more pressure on Ollie Pope’s number three Test spot.
