Enzo Maresca: Chelsea boss ‘happy’ and ‘in love with the players’ despite comments last week about ‘worst 48 hours’

Maresca, who led the Blues to Club World Cup and Europa Conference League glory earlier this year, has guided Chelsea to the semi-finals three times in 18 months.

However, as of Saturday, as he was unable to explain what he meant, speculation began to circulate about what he did and did not say.

Maresca’s squad selection and rotation policy has come under criticism at times this season and the former Leicester boss is believed to be seeking greater protection from Chelsea figures during their recent four-match winless run.

He was also quick to highlight injury and suspension issues, with star forward Cole Palmer injured for much of the season and key midfielder Moises Caicedo suspended for three matches and managing an ongoing knee problem.

Maresca, who qualified for the Champions League in his first season in charge and then led Chelsea to two trophies, thinks perhaps he should receive more support.

Having made it to the last four of the League Cup, the Blues have the chance to win the gold medal once again.

Asked if he felt the support of the club, Maresca told Sky Sports: “We have to focus on reaching the semi-finals tonight, the support of the fans has always been there.

“We are heading in the right direction, everything I do is because I want the best for everyone – the fans, the players, everyone.”
