Eric Swalwell suspends campaign for California governor

Rep. Eric Swalwell said Sunday evening that he was suspending his campaign for governor of California amid sexual harassment allegations against the Democratic lawmaker.
“To my family, staff, friends and supporters, I deeply regret the misjudgments I made in my past,” Swalwell said. A post on X announcing the suspension of its campaign.
“I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made, but this is my fight, not a campaign’s,” he added.
Swalwell’s announcement comes after growing calls for him to drop out of the race to replace fellow Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom and a day after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said it was investigating an allegation that Swalwell sexually assaulted one of his accusers in New York in April 2024.
Swalwell was a leading candidate in the governor’s race. San Francisco Chronicle On Friday, a woman who worked on his congressional staff for nearly two years alleged that he had sexual intercourse with her while she was her boss and sexually assaulted her twice while she was too drunk to give consent.
Shortly after the Chronicle published this story, CNN In addition to this accuser, “three other women who spoke to CNN also made allegations of various types of sexual misconduct by the Democratic congressman — including Swalwell sending them unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos.”
