Ericsson, a multinational telecommunications company providing network and telecommunications equipment and services worldwide, opened a new R&D unit to support 5G software development in Bengaluru on November 13.
The new R&D unit will initially focus on developing 5G and 5G Advanced features for Ericsson 5G baseband. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the company’s global RAN (Radio Access Network) software teams.
According to the Swedish firm, the initiative is part of Ericsson’s broader R&D expansion in India, including the growth of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) development. Ericsson is focusing on advancing 5G, 6G and AI development at its R&D centers in Bengaluru, Chennai and Gurugram.
Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for South East Asia, Oceania and India Market Region, said: “The establishment of R&D center in India for RAN software development represents a significant step towards strengthening our R&D operations in India. While leveraging Indian software capabilities, we also contribute to building the knowledge base and telecom eco-system in the country.”
David Bjore, Head of RAN Software and Computing Platforms at Ericsson, said: “We are building on the strong partnerships we have established in Bengaluru, Chennai and Gurugram, and are developing this RAN software ourselves for the first time in India. This is an important step because it not only supports India’s emerging technology scene, but also enables us to create solutions in the country that can have a global impact.”
