ICE to begin operation targeting 300K+ Haitian migrants losing TPS status

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to significantly increase operations to identify and detain Haitian citizens whose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is expected to expire soon, multiple federal sources tell Fox News.
The expanded operation is expected to start from this week.
The Supreme Court’s certified decision is expected to be delivered to lower courts on Monday, paving the way for the Trump administration to end TPS for more than 300,000 Haitians.
Federal sources told Fox News that Ohio will be heavily targeted due to the presence of a large Haitian population in Springfield, Ohio. ICE leadership has been kept informed of operational plans, sources said.

Last month, the Supreme Court reversed lower court orders that had delayed the administration’s termination of TPS for Haiti and Syria while the case was pending.
TPS was first granted to Haiti following the country’s devastating earthquake in 2010. This designation allows eligible foreign nationals from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disaster, or other extraordinary circumstances to temporarily live and work legally in the United States.

The anticipated enforcement operation follows long-running efforts by the Trump administration to end Haiti’s TPS designation, suggesting that the program was never intended to become a permanent legal status.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson called the ruling a “tremendous win” for the administration.
“Today the Supreme Court affirmed what President Trump has always advocated: that temporary protected status is, by definition, temporary. It was never intended to be a path to permanent status or legal residence,” Jackson told Fox News Digital. “The Trump Administration continues to legally end egregious abuses in our immigration system that have harmed Americans for years.”
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) General Counsel James Percival also praised the decision in a post about X.
“Once again, the court vindicated DHS,” Percival wrote. “The T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY, but many of these definitions have become de facto amnesty. This is a win for the rule of law and common sense.”

The anticipated enforcement action comes as Springfield remains a focal point in the national immigration debate after the rapid growth of its Haitian community thrust the Ohio city into the national spotlight during the 2024 presidential campaign.
