United States senator Lindsey Graham issued a stern warning to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, claiming that US President Donald Trump will “kill” him if his regime continues to harm civilians, amid protests spreading across various provinces of Iran triggered by inflation and public anger towards government policies. In an interview with Fox News, Graham showed solidarity with protesters who have taken to the streets in Iran to demonstrate against the regime.

Graham, a Republican, warned Khamenei about US intervention in the region and said it would result in his death if he continued to “kill and terrorize” the people of the Islamic Republic. “To the people of Iran, we stand with you tonight. We support you in taking back your country from the Ayatollah who killed you and terrorized the world. We pray for you. We support you. Donald J. Trump is not Barack Obama. He has your back,” the senator said in the interview. “To the Ayatollah, you must understand: If you continue to kill your people who demand a better life, Donald J Trump will kill you. To the Ayatollah and his thugs: If you continue to kill your people in defiance of President Trump, you will wake up dead,” he added.

Graham’s comments come as tensions rise after Trump threatened to intervene in protests in Iran. The US president had said Washington was “locked in and ready” to respond if authorities in the Islamic Republic used violence against peaceful protesters. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “If Iran shoots and brutally kills peaceful protesters, which is their tradition, the United States will come to their rescue. We are locked, loaded, and ready to go. Thank you for your attention on this matter!” According to CNN, people in Iran continue to protest against rising prices and economic difficulties, taking to the streets across provinces and some protests turning into deadly clashes with security forces.
