Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby entering treatment for gambling addiction amid NCAA investigation
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the football program to seek treatment for his ongoing gambling addiction.
Red Raiders The transfer QB, who signed a lucrative deal with the Red Raiders last summer, will leave the team for an unknown amount of time, the team announced Monday.
This trigger point came after Sorsby was investigated by the NCAA for a series of bets through an online company, sources said. Considering that the NCAA has a very strict policy on betting, this could also open up the possibility of the organization punishing Sorsby for his gambling actions.

The school released a statement that came about 30 minutes after the team was informed of what was happening with its starting quarterback and that he was seeking professional help for a gambling addiction.
“Texas Tech’s primary focus continues to foster an environment where student-athletes feel empowered to prioritize their mental health and seek professional help,” the statement said. “To protect the integrity of the recovery process, Texas Tech will have no further comment on Brendan’s condition or treatment progress at this time. We ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of Brendan and his family.”

After playing in Cincinnati last season, Sorsby entered the transfer portal. According to sources, he would sign a deal worth approximately $6 million with Texas Tech for next season.

On Monday, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire also made a statement regarding his starting quarterback.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” McGuire said. “It took courage to take this step and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

It is unknown how long Sorsby will be held at a residential treatment facility, and his status as a quarterback at Texas Tech will not change, although the NCAA is investigating his past online gambling.

It’s unclear where things will go next with Texas Tech. If he was punished for gambling, would the school be in trouble because of the revenue sharing agreement? What if he gets suspended for a while or Texas Tech is caught off guard by all this?
These are questions Texas Tech lawyers are currently investigating as this story continues over the next few months.
