Ex-Premier League footballer Joey Barton denied bail after being charged with assault

Former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton has been refused bail after a hearing.

The 43-year-old Widnes, Cheshire player, who previously played for Manchester City, Newcastle and QPR in England’s top league, has been detained since March 10, when he appeared at the Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on charges of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

On Friday, Judge David Potter rejected Barton’s bail application at Liverpool Crown Court.

Most of the bail hearing was held in private, and the judge later announced his decision in open court.

Barton, who did not attend the hearing but is represented by Simon Csoka KC, will appear at Liverpool Crown Court on April 7.

He and co-defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, of Huyton, Merseyside, are accused of attacking Kevin Lynch near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8.

O’Grady was released on conditional bail following a magistrate’s hearing.

Barton has an England cap and also played for Rangers, Burnley and Marseille before making his debut in 2017.

He went on to manage Fleetwood Town between 2018 and 2021, before spending two years at Bristol Rovers between 2021 and 2023.

He currently hosts the podcast ‘Common Sense with Joey Barton’, which is described as an “unfiltered” look at topics in sports, society, politics and more.
