Aroldis Chapman was a key part of the New York Yankees’ resurgence in the late 2010s; He was the guy the team called from the arena to finish games.
But Chapman’s failure to eliminate the Houston Astros in the 2019 American League Championship Series will forever be etched in the minds of Yankees fans. Regardless of his comments on Monday, it’s unlikely they’ll want him back in the bullpen.

The two-time World Series champion said: “Swing Complete” podcast in Spanish saying he would “retire immediately” if traded back to the Yankees.
“No way. He’s not even dead,” he said. New York Post. “If I were told I would be traded to New York, I would pack my things and go home. If that happened, I would retire immediately. I’m not crazy. Never again.”

Chapman explained that he felt “very disrespected” while playing in the Bronx. He said he got along well with the players and manager Aaron Boone, but had a problem with the way the “bosses” ran things.
“I got along well with all the players, I never had a problem with anyone, not even the manager. We are friends, we talk and do everything,” he said. “The bosses are the ones making these decisions.”
He pitched for the Yankees from 2017 to 2022.

Chapman won the World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023. He pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 2025. He had a 1.17 ERA with 85 strikeouts.
He will turn 38 before the start of the 2026 season.
