Exact date clocks go forward in the UK for lighter evenings | UK | News

This is a date that many people look forward to all winter. This serves as a sign that weeks of dark travels and minimal sunlight are finally over. Despite “losing” an hour of sleep, moving the clocks forward is welcomed by millions across the country.

Luckily for those longing for extra daylight hours, there isn’t much time left to wait. Clocks in England will go forward at the end of March to spring

Clocks will change at 1 a.m. on March 29, one day earlier than in 2025. This marks the official start of British Summer Time (BST).

On the last Sunday in October, the clocks will go back one hour at 02:00.

There is often confusion about when to turn the clocks forward and when to turn them back, but an easy method can eliminate any uncertainty.

An easy way to remember which way the clocks change at what time of year is to remember that the clocks ‘fall forward’ in the spring and ‘backward’ in the autumn.

Clocks go forward during the summer months due to a campaign to adjust clocks in the early 20th century, known as British Summer Time.

The original campaign argued that by changing the clocks during the summer months, people in the northern hemisphere could benefit more from earlier daylight hours.

According to the Royal Museums Greenwich: “William Willett, an early supporter of British Summer Time and the great-great-grandfather of Coldplay singer Chris Martin, published a pamphlet in 1907 entitled ‘The Waste of Daylight’, which suggested changing the clocks in the spring and putting them back in the autumn.

“But Willett’s proposal was complex, involving moving the clocks forward 80 minutes in four separate spurts of 20 minutes each. Willett died in 1915. A year later Parliament passed the Summer Time Act, which introduced the practice of moving the clocks forward one hour during the summer months.”

The decision to change the hours on Saturday or Sunday morning was made because it would be the least disruptive option for schools and businesses.

Most internet-connected devices, such as smartphones, should update themselves automatically. However, some devices may require people to update them manually. About 70 countries follow some form of daylight saving time, but the timing varies from region to region.
