F-15 Spins Into The Ground While On Fire In Middle East (Updated)

Details are very limited at the moment, but an F-15 crashed in the Middle East. Online accounts claim the incident occurred in Kuwait. Videos show the plane making a flat turn while engulfed in flames, missing its vertical tails, and fire coming from the tail section before hitting the ground. At least one crew member ejected safely.

See updates with the latest information at the bottom of the article.

Unconfirmed reports say this was a friendly fire incident, but we cannot confirm that or who the jet belonged to. The Israeli Air Force, or USAF, is highly active in the region to gain access to Iran (primarily via eastern Iraq) and also to defend against incoming drones. Both countries use F-15s. Saudi Arabia and Qatar also fly F-15s in the region. It appears that the aircraft involved may be a Strike Eagle variant flown by all listed countries, but this is also uncertain at this time. Israel and Saudi Arabia also fly single-seat F-15A/Cs. No USAF F-15Cs were deployed in CENTCOM’s area of responsibility.

In the video, a crewman without any markings on his uniform is seen standing on the ground next to his parachute. Another image shows him or another crew member in the back of an SUV in relatively good condition, at least apparently.

The battlefield is extremely complex and the threat of friendly fire is considerable. A lot This is real considering how many missiles and drones Iran has fired westwards, how much damage those weapons can do, and all the tactical aircraft coming and going. It is unclear whether the incident had anything to do with Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia signaling that they might join the war, albeit for defensive purposes. Doing this is more complicated than it seems, and the United States and Israel may pressure it not to happen, as deconflicting airspace and integrating other allies into carefully prepared war plans is extremely challenging and fraught with risk at this stage. This is exactly what I was talking about on X tonight before this happened.

Easier said than done. They have very capable aircraft, but unraveling air operations and changing planning could be more trouble and invite risk than it’s worth, at least at this stage. https://t.co/uhKS4CwT7L

At the same time, catastrophic mechanical failures also occur. We don’t know what happened right now.

If this had been a USAF or IAF jet, it would have been the first known loss of coalition aircraft in combat.

Once again, details can and likely will change as we learn more about what happened and who was involved.

We’ve reached out to CENTCOM for more information.

UPDATE: 03:00 EST—

Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense released a statement saying multiple aircraft were involved and all crew members were safe. What exactly remains unclear:

“The spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense stated that many US military planes crashed this morning and fully confirmed the safety of the crew. The relevant authorities immediately initiated search and rescue efforts, thus the crew were evacuated and transferred to the hospital to check their health status and provide the necessary medical care. Stating that their condition was stable, the official spokesperson stated that direct coordination was provided with friendly US forces regarding the incident and joint technical measures were taken. Relevant officials said, “We are following the investigations to determine the causes of the incident and call for information from official sources.”

UPDATE: 2:42 AM EST—

The crew’s helmet decoration appears to match exactly that belonging to the 335th Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina, which would make it a USAF F-15E. It’s possible that the pilot or WSO wearing the helmet is currently in a different squadron, but regardless, this is a USAF F-15E.

UPDATE: 2:02 AM EST—

Additional videos and images are emerging, but we cannot verify them, so they should be considered unconfirmed.

One video shows the moment the F-15 allegedly was shot down or experienced some kind of explosion. Once again, we cannot confirm the authenticity of the short clip:

Additional photos allegedly show two crew members on the ground, a female airman and another male with blood on his hands. There are claims that not one but two planes were shot down. Again, this should be considered unconfirmed at this time.

Iran just shot down 2 US F-15 planes.

What’s going on?

I heard one of the pilots didn’t make it.

These are not friendly fires. https://t.co/NeR9EALdA1

Another photograph allegedly shows the moment locals approached one of the crew demanding their surrender. The ejection seat’s life raft can be seen in the foreground:
