F-35 Stealth Jets Set For Deadly Upgrade – What The PL-15 Threat Taught The US | World News

Washington: Learning from the India-Pakistan conflicts in May, the USA is preparing to equip its F-35 stealth fighter jets with the advanced European Meteor missile. The move marks an increase in air combat capabilities. Meteor, Europe’s most advanced air-to-air missile, has a range of up to 200 kilometers and is powered by a ramjet engine, creating a ‘no-escape zone’ for enemy aircraft.

Its two-way data link and advanced targeting systems make it one of the most lethal beyond visual range air-to-air missiles (BVR AAMs) currently in service.

According to information obtained, the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) has recently completed a series of important land-based integration tests with the Meteor missile and F-35A fighter jet. These tests, conducted in collaboration with MBDA and Lockheed Martin, confirmed key hardware responses between the missile and the fifth-generation fighter jet before air trials began. The tests included ground vibration evaluations and compliance checks to ensure the missile could be safely loaded and deployed from the F-35A’s internal weapons bay.

Photos released by the F-35 JPO show the Meteor missile loaded into the interior compartment of the F-35A. Tests included single and dual missile payload configurations; this confirmed that the integration could accommodate multiple missiles while maintaining the aircraft’s stealth profile.

The successful integration of the F-35A will also pave the way for other operators of the stealth jet, including the United Kingdom, Italy and allied countries, to use the Meteor in their F-35 fleets.

The missile, developed by European countries, had proven its reliability in previous tests. While the UK has successfully conducted live flight tests on the F-35B, Italy is sponsoring the integration of the F-35A. On November 28, Brazil’s Gripen-E fighter jet conducted the missile’s first live fire, demonstrating the missile’s lethal capabilities and highlighting growing international demand.

Meteor is currently being integrated with other platforms such as the Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen and now the F-35 jets widely used by NATO allies.

The missile’s 200-kilometer long-range engagement capability, combined with ramjet propulsion and two-way data link, enables it to create a ‘no-escape zone’ for enemy aircraft. Its integration with stealth platforms such as the F-35 is expected to influence air combat strategies in the Indo-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East over the next decade, strengthening its ability to counter threats such as China’s PL-15 missile, Russia’s S-400 systems and other advanced air weapons.

With the F-35 and Meteor combination, the Pentagon is signaling a decisive move to modernize air combat readiness, learn from recent regional conflicts, and prepare for the evolving environment of high-end air warfare.
