F1 driver Carlos Sainz criticises TV coverage for missing overtakes and focusing on girlfriends

The television broadcast also failed to convey the dramatic dogfight between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, which showed McLaren celebrating after retaining the constructors’ championship.

Sainz added: “They didn’t show any of the four or five passes I made last weekend, they didn’t show Fernando chasing Lewis either, they missed a lot of things. The other one [showing the off-track things] That’s okay, but don’t lose sight of the point. “I think they’re exaggerating a bit by showing celebrities and their girlfriends.”

Alonso crossed the line less than a second behind Hamilton, who suffered brake problems in the closing laps and dropped from seventh to eighth after receiving a five-second penalty.

This was after Alonso had shouted at the race engineer: “Damn man, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. I mean, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. Is it safe to drive without brakes? It’s got to be F—— P7, you can’t drive on the track like you’re alone.”

Broadcasters such as Sky Sports source their race footage from F1’s world broadcast but offer in-car cameras where viewers can watch uninterrupted live action.

Formula 1 declined to comment but a source said it was proud to offer the best possible broadcast product to all its fans around the world in a very complex and fast-paced environment.
