Family ‘heartbroken’ as they name missing Devon swimmer

The name of one of the swimmers who disappeared while swimming on Christmas Day was announced on social media.
The family of Matthew Upham, who owns an antique shop in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, posted a statement on his business Instagram page.
After two men in their 60s and 40s disappeared at sea, emergency services launched a search in the area. Budleigh Salterton on Thursday Shortly after 10:25 GMT. The coast guard’s search operation was stopped around 17:00.
Statement on the subject Instagram story of the business read: “Our family is heartbroken over the loss of our beloved family member, Matthew Upham, who was reported missing on Christmas morning.”
He continued: “Matthew is much loved and will be forever missed.
“We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the emergency services who responded, particularly the RNLI and the coastguard, for their dedication, professionalism and tireless efforts during this extremely difficult time.
“We are deeply grateful to them for their compassion and support.”
“We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we grieve and support each other. We thank everyone for their understanding, kindness and condolences.”
Police said at 1pm on Friday the men were still missing and investigations were ongoing, with police presence remaining at the scene.
