Family mourns ‘radiant’ mother-of-two killed by falling tree branch
Tributes have poured in for the Central Coast mother of two who died in a freak accident while on holiday with her family.
Dr Melinda Pickup, 48, died when a large tree branch fell on her windshield during a heavy storm as she was driving through the Macquarie Pass on the Illawarra Highway south of Sydney just after 4pm on January 17.
Her husband and two young sons were in the car but were not physically injured.
A conservation biologist with a passion for science communication, Dr. Pickup was described as an “extraordinary scientist” by his employer, Greening Australia.
The national nonprofit organization said in a statement that Dr. He described Pickup as “innovative – dynamic, passionate and visionary – but also meticulous, disciplined and unwavering in his commitment to scientific rigor.”
“His leadership, insight and warmth will be deeply missed by a community that is immeasurably diminished by his loss,” he said.
“Melinda brought science to life. She took her knowledge from the classroom to the field, applying conservation genetics to real-world challenges that require practical, evidence-based solutions.”
Family friend Cherie Gardner described the mother as a rare and genuine beauty, defined by effortless kindness and an always open heart.
“As a mother, she was the steady, loving anchor of her sons’ lives, and as a wife and daughter, she devoted herself completely to those she loved,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page.
“She had a quiet, radiant grace and the ability to be truly present in every moment, making everyone around her feel valued and deeply cared for.”
As the family “dealt with unimaginable loss and recover from their deep pain,” the family friend is looking for ways to raise money to ease the financial burden.
