Family where toddler’s body found in Brookfield had fled house, owing thousands in rent

Investigators scoured the backyard for hours using special ground-penetrating machines before focusing their attention on digging up a section of lawn next to the concrete slab at the back door.

At around 1.30pm, police discovered a shallow grave under a small patch of dry grass next to an old trampoline, just a few meters from the house, hiding the remains of an 18-month-old boy who had been buried there for 11 years.

“I was horrified,” Balbiani said Thursday as he stood next to the newly disturbed soil where the boy’s remains were found.

“I’ve lived here for eight years. My children have played in this garden many times. I don’t know what to think. It’s very, very sad.”

“Something bad happened here. Something terrible and shocking.”

He said the body was buried less than 50 centimeters deep.

The owner of the house said the estate agency tried to recoup some of the money and damage it lost in 2015 through the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but this did not work.

He said he only went to the four-bedroom house in Saltbush Crescent once in 2014, to change the smoke alarm batteries, and briefly met the couple and their three children.

He said the father was well-dressed in trousers and a shirt, but he had a feeling something was wrong.

“He looked like he could work in a doctor’s office or somewhere professional like that,” the owner said.

“But they looked a little strange. Something wasn’t right. I felt like he was dangerous. It’s all a bit blurry now.”

“I hope Australia has the power under its extradition laws to find the people involved and bring them back to Australia.”

He said he and his wife were deeply saddened by the news that the little boy’s body was on his property.

“The whole thing was like a whirlwind,” he said. “My wife was shaking when she told me this. We can’t believe it.”

Police said in a statement that the missing persons team has taken priority in the investigation and the investigation is ongoing.
