Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Wishah killed in Israeli strike on Gaza | Gaza

Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera said one of its journalists was killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza on Saturday, one of at least 260 Palestinian journalists killed since Israel’s Gaza war began in October 2023.

The broadcaster’s website stated that channel cameraman Ahmed Wishah was killed in an attack targeting a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

Al Jazeera said it “strongly condemns this heinous crime”, adding: “This represents a new and flagrant violation of all international laws and norms and reflects the continuation of the systematic policy of targeting journalists and silencing the voice of truth.”

Palestinian civil defense officials said that Ahmed’s brother Mohammed was killed by Israeli bombardment while traveling in his car on April 8 this year.

Following Ahmed’s death, the Israeli army announced that it carried out the attack, but said that Wishah was a “Hamas terrorist”.

“The IDF (Israeli Defense Force) has confirmed that it carried out an attack on Hamas terrorist Ahmed Wishah,” a military spokesman told AFP.

The spokesman did not immediately provide evidence to support the military’s claim about Wishah, but said “a statement with more details will be issued.”

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 260 journalists have been killed since October 2023, when Israel’s war on Gaza began.
