Shea Langeliers tears meniscus, could miss rest of 2026 MLB season

One of MLB’s top trade candidates could be sidelined for the rest of the season ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline.

Athletic catcher Shea Langeliers, who has spent his career behind the plate and in the batter’s box, suffered a meniscus tear that could cause him to miss the rest of the season. per ESPN.

The 28-year-old actor injured his knee while running on the track, and now he and his team are debating whether to undergo surgery to repair the tear in his knee.

ESPN reported that if surgery is the decision, it would be the end of Langeliers’ 2026 campaign.

But either way, teams that could potentially trade the All-Star player will likely now be out of the running. Langeliers is considered one of the best at his position in MLB, so the A’s had no plans to move him despite a 44-60 record that kept them out of the playoffs.

Langeliers was the team’s best player, representing the team in its first All-Star game earlier this month. And he’s doing just that while others like Nick Kurtz, Brent Rooker and Jacob Wilson are also dealing with injuries.

Langeliers is slashing .263/.332/.497 with a .829 OPS, 23 home runs and 51 RBIs this season. Those are the numbers the A’s hope Langeliers will post after a successful 2025 campaign that included 31 homers this season and a career-high .861 OPS.

He was on pace to break some career records, but this injury overshadowed everything.

And if postseason contenders were hoping the A’s would change their tune on moving Langeliers before the deadline, they’re equally disappointed. The New York Yankees are a team expected to hit the market before the deadline, and an A’s deal on the Langeliers would most likely happen.

Now, catchers like Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies and Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles could see increased interest from teams hoping to solidify the position for playoff contention.

The A’s will need to move forward with Jonah Heim sidelined by Langeliers, and he has also been in trade talks due to his veteran skill set. But he is jumping into a starting role and might not be as available.
