Father walks daughter down aisle days after quadruple bypass surgery

The father, who had a heart attack a few days before his daughter’s wedding, did not let open heart surgery prevent him from walking with his daughter.
Days before the planned ceremony, Rick Nelson began experiencing chest pain while at a friend’s house. His wife, Gail, took him to Cleveland Clinic’s Marymount Emergency Room, according to a hospital statement sent to Fox News Digital.
When it was confirmed that Nelson had suffered a heart attack, he was flown by helicopter to Cleveland Clinic’s main campus. Doctors found several serious coronary blockages that would require open-heart surgery.

As Nelson prepared for surgery, he told his doctors: “My daughter Rachel is getting married on Saturday. I need to be there.”

The initial plan was for her daughter to come visit the hospital so she could see her in her wedding dress for the first time – but it turned into something much bigger.

Care teams from across the hospital worked together to ensure Nelson could attend the June 6 wedding, coordinating every detail to move the ceremony safely to the hospital’s rooftop.

Just days after life-saving heart surgery, Nelson traded in his hospital bed for a front row seat at his daughter’s wedding. The maintenance team prepped the venue, helped Nelson get dressed for the occasion, and made sure she could walk her daughter down the aisle.

About 80 family members and friends gathered on the hospital rooftop; Caregivers lined the hallway as Nelson, who was recovering from surgery a few days earlier, accompanied her daughter to meet her son-in-law, Dana Schultz.

According to the Cleveland Clinic’s statement, Dr. “Moments like this remind us that the work we do is about more than medicine. It’s about people, families, and unrepeatable milestones and the collective determination a team shares to make something so meaningful possible,” Bakaeen said.
“It’s hard to put into words what this means to us,” Nelson’s wife said. “Everyone went above and beyond.”

The celebration continued at the couple’s reception later that day, where the bride’s mother began the toast with a cheerful quip: “He didn’t need to make such a dramatic move to avoid making a speech.”

Nelson has since been discharged and is recovering at home with his family while he begins cardiac rehab; He is grateful that he was able to keep his promise to his daughter.
