Fatty fish protects women against Alzheimer’s disease

Eating fatty fish can protect women from Alzheimer’s disease.

Experts in King’s College London analyzed blood samples from 841 people, including Alzheimer and 306, and found a remarkable loss of unsaturated fat compared to healthy ones in the blood of women with brain disorder.

In men with or without disease, there was no difference between fat molecules, and researchers believe that women can help to understand why the possibilities of alzheimer’s diagnosis are more than men.

Boffins suggest that women can protect against the disease by eating oily fish such as salmon and mackerel and increasing the intake of omega-3.

Cristina Legido-Quigley, the senior author of the study, said: “Women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s disease and after the age of 80, more often diagnosed with illness than men.

“One of the most surprising things we’ve seen when looking at different sexes was that there was no difference in these lipids (fats) in healthy and cognitively distorted men, but for women, this picture was completely different.

“The study reveals that Alzheimer’s lipid biology is different between genders and makes new ways for research. Our study shows that women should be sure that they should take omega fatty acids in their diet – through oily fish or supplements.”
