President Donald Trump eyes Greenland as tourist destination offers array of adventures

With President Donald Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland for national defense and security reasons, the country also offers an arctic escape to tourists young and old.

Although approximately 80% of the land is covered in ice, Greenland is a hotspot for ice fjords, hot springs, outdoor recreation, wildlife and museums. This is “a land of stunning beauty and contrasts… [and] According to Frommers, it can feel like a separate world.

Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, is the country’s largest city with a population of less than 20,000. According to Visit Greenland, it has restaurants, fashion boutiques, unique architecture and several museums.

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, as well as airports in Chicago, Washington, DC, Houston, Seattle and San Francisco all offer flights to Nuuk.

United Airlines launched its first direct seasonal flights from Newark to Nuuk last summer.

Nuuk includes the Greenland National Museum and Archives, the Nuuk Art Museum, and the Katuaq Cultural Centre.

Outside of Nuuk in western Greenland lies Ilulissat, home of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region is home to Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world, according to UNESCO.

Southern Greenland has greener landscapes and is home to Kujataa.

Kujataa, a UNESCO cultural site, is known for Norse and Inuit farming, hunting and fishing.

According to the Seafarers’ Museum and Park and other sources, the Norse were Norse Viking-era settlers from Iceland led by Erik the Red who established medieval agricultural colonies in southwestern Greenland around AD 985-986.

“Sheep farming, in particular, is central to the cultural landscape of the region,” UNESCO writes.

“Mild summers and long daylight hours encourage high-quality grazing, enabling the production of wool and meat essential for local subsistence.”

Southern Greenland is also popular for its 38-degree hot springs with crystal clear waters, which were discovered 1,000 years ago, according to Visit Greenland.

One of the most popular springs is Uunartoq Hot Springs, surrounded by mountain peaks and drifting icebergs.

According to various sources, tourism to Greenland in 2023 – including both air and cruise passengers – reached an estimated 116,000 visitors.

Greenland’s total visitors in 2024-2025 were estimated to be in the range of 120,000-140,000 annually.
