Federal departments delay return to office due to lack of space

(Ottawa) Several federal departments have postponed or are considering postponing the return of their staff to the office four days a week, planned for this summer, due to a lack of space.

The Treasury Board announced earlier this year that public service executives must work onsite five days a week starting May 4, and all other federal employees must be in the office four days a week starting July 6.
However, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in a message to its staff last week that it was postponing the requirement until it found more office space.
For now, the ministry said, only executives will have to be present on site four days a week starting in July, while other employees are invited to keep their current schedule, namely three days in the office per week.
Global Affairs Canada announced a similar plan last month to accommodate a multi-year renovation project.
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada reported that the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada was actively seeking to lease more office space to implement the federal government’s requirements, not having enough space in most of its locations.
