Federal holidays 2025: Under the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon, federal employees will receive extra leave during the holidays this year, with December 24 and December 26 officially designated as days off, according to the report.

Under the new order, federal employees will continue to celebrate the standard Christmas Day holiday on Dec. 25, but the additional two days mark a rarity in recent years and provide extended holiday breaks for many workers.

Trump Christmas Eve Federal Holiday Executive Order Announced

Trump’s executive order states that some agencies and offices can remain open, although most federal employees will have extra days off, according to a Federal News Network report. Employees performing duties related to national security, defense, or other essential public needs may still be required to report for duty.

Is Christmas Eve a Federal Holiday Every Year?

Historically, presidents have occasionally granted additional vacation time to federal employees. Former US president Joe Biden gave his employees Christmas Eve leave in 2024. Even during Trump’s previous terms, federal employees received extra leave for Christmas Eve in 2018, 2019 and 2020.


According to a report by the Federal News Network, former US president Barack Obama gave leave to federal employees on December 26, 2014 and December 24, 2012. Former US president George W. Bush also gave permission on December 24 in both 2001 and 2007.
