As a 12-year-old teenager, Zoey Renee Anne Benoit “loved art, loved playing with her siblings, and she sang very well without realizing she had such a beautiful voice,” her mother, Lori Hayer, wrote in a Facebook post. “She was our baby, our daughter and our brave Hulk, who did not hesitate to kick the butts of those who made her angry,” adds her mother.
Other members of Lori Hayer’s family were at the school during the shooting, she said. They escaped unharmed.

Abel Mwansa
Abel Mwansa, 12, was killed in the tragedy. “Seeing you leave with that beautiful smile on your way to Tumbler Ridge High School was so heartwarming. I saw in you a bright future, a leader, an engineer and a scientist, because you loved doing experiments,” wrote his father, also named Abel Mwansa, late Thursday afternoon.
“Seeing your child murdered at this age is heartbreaking. I was devastated when I saw you packed in a black, lifeless, closed bag, like the ones you see in the movies. It was devastating,” Mr. Mwansa added.

Kylie Smith, 12, was killed in the shooting. “She had a magnificent soul. She loved art and anime. She dreamed of studying in Toronto. We loved him so much,” his father, Lance Younge, said in an interview on CTV News.
“We are devastated and speechless at the scale of this tragedy,” wrote his aunt Shanon Dycke, as part of a crowdfunding campaign for the benefit of the family. Nearly $35,000 had been raised as of Thursday evening.

Jennifer Jacobs, also called Strang, is the mother of the shooter. She was found lifeless at her home. She was 39 years old.
Mme Jacobs denounced transphobia on social networks, his daughter being a trans woman. Describing herself as a “conservative libertarian,” Jennifer Jacobs advocated gun culture in some of her posts.

Emmett Jacobs was the half-brother of Jesse Van Rootselaar. He was found dead at the family home, near his mother, Jennifer Jacobs. He was 11 years old. No further information is available about him.

Shanda Aviugana-Durand
Shannda Aviugana-Durand was an educational assistant at Tumbler Ridge High School. She died at the age of 39. Little is known about her.
