Fire breaks out on container ship at Los Angeles port

A fire broke out on a container ship in Los Angeles, prompting a brief shelter-in-place order in surrounding communities due to concerns about hazardous materials in the ship’s cargo.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, all 23 crew members on board were identified and there were no injuries due to the electrical fire.

Authorities said they detected hazardous materials on the ship called One Henry Hudson.

On Saturday morning, Mayor Karen Bass announced that the shelter-in-place order, which had been in place for several hours for areas around the port, was canceled.

“The shelter-in-place order has been lifted for Los Angeles port communities, including Wilmington and San Pedro,” Bass told X in a statement. he said.

The US Coast Guard said that a 1 nautical mile security zone was established around the ship.

According to the fire department, the fire appears to have started below deck before spreading to various floors of the ship, causing an explosion in the middle of the deck.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started.

More than 100 firefighters were called to fight the fire at the Port of Los Angeles, known as the busiest port in North America.

Bass said their efforts continued throughout the night.

The 336-meter-long ship is operated by One Ocean Express, a shipping company headquartered in Singapore.

The ship was last in Japan before Los Angeles, stopping in Kobe, Nagoya and Tokyo.
