Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to run additional train services on its corridors on weekdays as a step towards easing public congestion due to rising pollution levels in Delhi. DMRC has also instructed the operations team to further increase the number of additional trips in case GRAP phase II is mandated by the authorities in the coming days.

DMRC will organize additional train services

As the Gradual Response Action Plan (GRAP) Phase II has come into effect in Delhi due to rising pollution levels, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to run 40 additional train services on its corridors on weekdays to provide extra passenger capacity. According to the DMRC spokesperson, the number of additional trips may increase to 60 if GRAP Phase III comes into effect. “This move aims to encourage people to use the metro instead of their own vehicles and help reduce the deteriorating air quality in the capital as a collective responsibility,” the spokesman said.

DMRC officials stated that measures to prevent pollution include regular sprinkling of water, washing of wheels of field vehicles, covering of construction materials and recycling of construction waste. Approximately 82 anti-smoke weapons have been deployed at the facilities and more will be added as needed. DMRC claims to be a pioneer in the use of anti-smoke weapons and adopted them before they were made mandatory. The company also says environmental department inspections have increased to ensure compliance with pollution control guidelines.

Earlier, DMRC had decided to expand platforms at 32 stations to reduce congestion during rush hours and improve commuting convenience. These metro stations include Noida Sector-15, 16 and 18, Golf Course and Noida City Center on Line-3 (Blue Line) and Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar and Preet Vihar on Line-4 (Blue Line Extension).

Meanwhile, the GRAP measures implemented in Delhi are being carried out under the direction of the Air Quality Management Commission and in line with the Supreme Court orders. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Tuesday announced that in a bid to reduce pollution, all commercial goods vehicles registered outside Delhi and not compliant with BS-VI emission standards will be banned from entering the city from November 1.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in southwest Delhi’s RK Puram district remained “very poor” at 308 as of 7 am on Wednesday morning. The AQI in Anand Vihar also remains “very poor” at 307. Ashok Vihar recorded an AQI of 302, followed by Bawana at 322; both were in the “very poor” category.
