Five dead after plane carrying child burns victim crashes in Texas

At least five people were killed when a Mexican Navy plane crashed in foggy conditions while carrying a child burn victim near Galveston, Texas, on Monday.

According to flight tracking site Flight Radar, the plane was last recorded at 15:01 local time (21:01 GMT) over Galveston Bay near Scholes International Airport.

The plane was taking part in a medical mission on behalf of the Michou y Mau Foundation, which provides care for Mexican children with severe burns.

Mexico’s Navy Secretariat said one person was missing and two others were rescued alive.

Video footage shared with the AP news agency showed that the wreckage of the plane was in the water, and witnesses and police officers entered the water to search for the wreckage.

Local yacht captain Sky Decker said he led two police officers to the site of the nearly submerged plane, then jumped in and found a seriously injured woman trapped.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it. He had maybe three inches of air space to breathe.

“And there was jet fuel in there mixed with the water, very bad fumes coming out. He was literally fighting for his life.”

Previously, the Mexican Navy Secretariat announced that search and rescue operations were continuing in coordination with the US Coast Guard.

The video, shot near Galveston’s Scholes International Airport, shows rescuers, including a dive team, working through thick fog.

The Michou y Mau Foundation expressed our “deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy” in a statement shared on X.
