Avatar: Fire and Ash is the sequel to the 2022 blockbuster Avatar: The Path of Water and marks the third installment of James Cameron’s epic sci-fi series that began with 2009’s Avatar. Avatar 3 was released in theaters on December 19 and received mixed reviews from audiences and critics; some call it “an astonishing visual spectacle”, while others say it is “the worst in the series so far”.

James Cameron’s Avatar series has traditionally had a strong foothold in India; Avatar: The Way of Water emerged as the highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country, grossing Rs 390 billion. But Avatar: Fire and Ash faces stiff resistance among the ongoing Dhurandhar juggernaut that shows little sign of slowing down. Avatar 3 collected Rs 67.25 crore nett in India in its opening weekend from December 19 to 21; Dhurandhar, on the other hand, took the lead at the domestic box office with Rs 99.70 crore in the same period; its third weekend in theaters.

James Cameron’s film collected Rs 8.50 crore nett in India on its debut Monday, according to early estimates from entertainment streaming portal Sacnilk. This takes the four-day India total of Avatar: Fire and Ash to Rs 75.75 billion. In comparison, Dhurandhar earned almost double that amount on the same day and minted Rs 16.50 million on its third Monday at the box office.

Talking about the worldwide collection of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the science fiction epic grossed $347.1 million worldwide this weekend, earning $89 million at the domestic and international box office and $258.1 million, according to the official statement from The Walt Disney Company. Additionally, “including the opening of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the three films in the Avatar franchise have grossed $5.6 billion so far.”

Avatar and Avatar: Path of Water are among the first and third highest-grossing films of all time, with worldwide grosses of $2.9 billion and $2.3 billion. Two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are currently in different stages of production and are scheduled to be released in theaters in 2029 and 2031 respectively.
