These were some of the epithets leveled at Hawthorn’s AFL men’s team, dubbed the “unsociable Falcons”, during their three-peat premiership dynasty under coach Alastair Clarkson.

“I don’t think it’s something we’ve gone out of our way to include in our program, but I think it’s something that happens naturally with young guys coming in,” Hawks defenseman Tamara Smith told this imprint.

Across Hawthorn’s men’s and women’s programmes, Smith said young players who were “not afraid to speak their mind” brought “new, cheeky energy” to the team.

“I actually think it’s been pretty refreshing for our game,” he said.

“In the traditional sense, our game is very constricting… you have to fit a certain profile to play and I think it’s really exciting that we’re seeing this brand of players now who are completely different, they’re brash, they’re talking back to the media and they’ve got that ‘I don’t really care’ attitude.”
