Five drown in Cauvery river near Muthathi in Karnataka

On the evening of June 24, five people, including four female relatives, drowned in the Cauvery river near Muthathi in Mandya district of Karnataka.

The deceased were identified as 50-year-old Vijayamma, 38-year-old Shwetha, 20-year-old Chaitra and 28-year-old Priyanka, who are related to each other, and Mahesh, the driver of the car in which they were traveling.

A group of relatives had rented a car from Bengaluru to Muthathi on June 24. After praying at temples in Channapatna and Muthathi, they went to the Cauvery river for diving.

Mandya district police chief VJ Shobha Rani said that Vijayamma was the first person to lose her balance at a certain point in the river as she could not understand the depth. When he started to drown, others tried to save him, but their efforts were in vain.

Besides Vijayamma, three of her relatives and the car driver also drowned.

Fire and Emergency Service personnel took the bodies to the morgue.
