Footballer hospitalised after being attacked in Huntingdon train stabbing

His club Scunthorpe United has confirmed that footballer Jonathan Gjoshe has been injured as one of the victims of the stabbing incident on the Huntingdon train.

Gjoshe was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital following the shocking attack on an LNER train bound for London King’s Cross on Saturday evening.

A man has appeared in court charged with 10 counts of attempted murder following a mass stabbing on a London-bound train and a separate attack earlier the same day.

A statement from the National League club said: “Everyone at the club, including the board, management and team-mates as well as all the staff behind the scenes, sends Jonathan our sincerest wishes for a full recovery; this also goes to all the victims on the train.”

22-year-old Gjoshe serves as The Iron’s right-back, but has not yet played in the National League this season, although he was on the bench in two matches in September.

The player’s former club Corinthian-Casuals also released a statement emphasizing the club’s “shock” and “sadness” at the news.

“Jonathan was a regular defender for Mu Maan last season before moving on to professional football with Scunthorpe in the summer,” the club said in a statement. “From all of us at Casuals we wish ‘Jonno’ a full and speedy recovery, and we also extend our best wishes to his father, who is a regular at King George’s.”

Five victims have been discharged from hospital and a “heroic” railway worker is reportedly fighting for his life in hospital.

A 35-year-old man from London was also arrested at the scene at Huntingdon railway station but was released without further action. British Transport Police ruled out terrorism motivation for the attack.
