Trump’s gloating over Thomas Massie’s private life in the wake of his wife’s death proves a step too far for some MAGA loyalists
President Donald Trump boasted about the news that Republican Rep. Thomas Massie had remarried after the death of his first wife last year; which proved to be a step too far for some MAGA loyalists.
The Kentucky representative announced on Nov. 3 that he remarried last month following the sudden death of his first wife of 31 years, Rhonda, in June 2024.
Trump, who has been married three times, slammed Massie and his new bride. Carolyn Moffa, whom he met 10 years ago while working as a policy aide to Senator Rand Paul.
“Is Thomas Massie, sometimes called Rand Paul Jr. because he always voted against the Republican Party, already married??? Wow, that happened so quickly!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Friday.
“No wonder the polls show he has less than an 8% chance of winning the Election,” Trump continued. “Anyway, I wish Thomas and (?) a wonderful life. His wife will soon realize she’s stuck with a Loser!”

Independent He contacted Massie’s office for comment.
Trump has been called out by some of his own MAGA loyalists, including his former attorney Jenna Ellis, who was among those who falsely claimed the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.
Ellis accused Trump of “political mudslinging” and publicly condemned Massie’s remarks about his new wife.
“From my friendship with Massie for over a decade, I know personally how incredibly difficult it was to suddenly find herself a widow and lose her best friend,” Ellis said in a post on X.
“Some things are still sacred and should still be beyond this kind of political mud-slinging,” he said.
Right-wing commentator Evan Kilgore said Trump’s post was “disgusting.”
“Donald Trump attacked Thomas Massie for recently remarrying after his wife tragically passed away last year,” Kilgore said on the X account. “He then uses this as an attack on @RepThomasMassie and implies he will lose the next election.
“This is truly disgusting,” he continued. “Donald Trump lost me”
Conservative commentator Rebekah Worsham, whose X account “Patriotic Blonde” has more than 100,000 followers, sarcastically mocked Trump for his comment about Massie.

“How presidential,” he said, quoting Trump.
Other accounts claiming to be “America first” also criticized the president.
“This is too low,” another said. “It’s bad enough that Trump attacked Thomas Massie (who is actually First America) but left his wife out of it. Disgusting.”
Another “America First” X user said, “This is very bad behavior by Trump.”
Massie has led the charge to challenge the president by calling for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, joining forces with Democrats and other insurgent GOP lawmakers, including Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The Georgia representative, once a Trump loyalist, found himself at the receiving end of the president’s ire after refusing to back down on his call for the release of the Epstein files.
Massie has been at odds with Trump for years, with the pair in the midst of a public feud.
