Former Missouri substitute teacher gets 10 years in prison for sex with students

A former substitute teacher in Missouri was sentenced to ten years in prison Wednesday after being accused of giving students money, alcohol and drugs in exchange for sex.
Carissa Jane Smith, 31, of Dixon, was arrested last November on 19 charges, including statutory rape and sexual intercourse with a student, the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said.
Smith worked as a professional, long-term substitute for the Dixon School District, the district said in a statement following Smith’s arrest last year. He resigned in August 2024.

The sheriff’s office said in a probable cause statement that Smith would offer students money, marijuana and alcohol in exchange for sex or allow them to perform oral sex.
Smith allegedly met the victims in isolated locations or while her husband was away on business.

The sheriff’s office said victims told investigators Smith would have sex at his home or other locations “such as gravel driveways or roadsides.” One of the victims said Smith asked her to have sex with him when they were in middle school.

Victims told investigators that Smith told them not to tell anyone about the encounters or he could get in trouble.

Smith’s sentence includes a sentence of six years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for endangering the welfare of a child and two years each for sexual intercourse.
