Former NFL star JJ Watt sparks debate over self-service tipping

As tipping notices pop up everywhere from coffee stands to grocery stores, many Americans are fed up and confused about what’s appropriate. Now even former NFL star JJ Watt is weighing in.
Watt recently sparked debate about X after questioning whether tipping should be offered in a self-service scenario.
He asked his followers what they would do in the following scenario: You order at a counter, find your own table, pour your own coffee, and grab your own food when the bell rings.
AMERICANS are fed up with tipping culture, with almost 9 in 10 saying it’s completely ‘out of control’
But then you’re presented with an iPad screen asking you to tip 20%, 25%, 30%, or some other amount, with 20% preselected.
“What’s your move?” he asked.
Wednesday’s post quickly went viral.
It received more than 15,000 comments and more than 4 million views, reigniting a national debate about when tipping is and isn’t necessary.
“I only tip because I know the servers live in poverty,” one user told Watt.
The person added: “So should you with your vast wealth.”

Watt, the former Houston Texans linebacker and three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, said he was “obviously” tipping but added: “There’s no host in this situation, so I asked the question. It was completely self-service.”
The change reflects broader cultural disillusionment. Nearly nine in 10 Americans think tipping culture is “out of control,” while 83% support banning automated service fees, according to a new WalletHub survey.
BARTMEN SAY A COMMON REQUEST COSTS TIPS AND SOME CUSTOMERS HAVE NO IDEA
This sentiment was echoed in the comments about X.
“I have long been a 20 percent or higher tipper, but this scenario raises a valid question,” one person said. “And it’s becoming more and more common.”

Many people were less open-minded.
“100% no tip. Nothing,” one person wrote.
“You tip zero,” another added. “It’s not your responsibility to pay anyone behind the counter. It’s the company’s responsibility.”

Etiquette experts say the key distinction at the heart of the debate is service versus transaction.
“Donation is tied to service,” said Lisa Mirza Grotts, a California-based etiquette expert and former San Francisco director of protocol. “If service is not provided, no tip is expected, especially when everything is self-service.”

Some say they opt for custom tip amounts or choose not to tip at all when faced with digital prompts. (iStock)
Grotts said the digital notice request was not a “social obligation.”
“It’s just a system that asks questions,” he told Fox News Digital.

But he acknowledged that when you start at 20% it can be “scary”. He was shocked when he heard the desire to buy sweets from a supermarket recently.
“Compulsory tipping both reflects and encourages the continued rise of entitlement culture and the decline of meritocracy.”
“It got out of control,” he said. “Tipping rewards service over transactions. And ordering at the register is nothing more than a transaction.”
Yonason Goldson, Missouri-based director of Ethical Imperatives LLC, said the tension reflects changing cultural norms.

“The original concept of the tip was to reward good service,” Goldson told Fox News Digital. “Compulsory tipping both reflects and encourages the continued rise of entitlement culture and the decline of meritocracy.”
Voluntary tipping can improve empathy, he added, but forced tipping often breeds resentment.

“I feel resentful and belittled when I have to tip,” Goldson said. “But voluntary tipping…gives me the opportunity to empathize with employees and choose to support them.”
Many agreed that mandatory referrals were out of control.

“In the above situation, a 10% tip is appropriate since no one served you,” one man commented on Watt’s post. “If they don’t let me change it then it’s zero.”
However, some social media users argue that tipping is a moral choice regardless of the service.

“I already tip well. The service industry is a tough job,” one commenter wrote on Watt’s post. “Generosity shouldn’t require exemplary service if you can afford it.”

Others online have taken a middle ground approach, offering smaller tips in self-service environments. “In these situations I tip $1.00 no matter what,” one person said.
Others said they preferred the custom option rather than predetermined percentages.
