Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram launched the book on Saturday Little India and the Indian Community of Singapore: Through the Ages. Written by Soundara Nayaki Vairavan, the game was first released in Singapore on April 25.
At the launch held here, the first copy was received by Edgar Pang, Consul General of the Republic of Singapore in Chennai.
Mr Chidambaram highlighted the 200-year history of Tamils in Singapore. “People of Indian origin have been living here for 200 years. There are many Tamils and there are also people who speak other languages. Tamil is one of the official languages of Singapore. It makes me happy that Tamils constitute a significant population among Indians in Singapore.”
Ms. Vairavan talked about the age-old connection between India and Singapore. “Many immigrants from China, India and other parts of the world came to Singapore to seek livelihood. They established themselves as traders, traders, entrepreneurs and ventured in many other fields. Therefore, India’s contribution to the development of Singapore has always been significant,” he said.
“Now, why has the book been launched in India? With the world becoming more digital, it has now become common for people to migrate overseas. Given the flood of information available on the internet, there is a general interest in various societies. Although it is predominantly about Singapore, people in India can relate to this book as it depicts their contemporaries in an expatriate society,” he added.
V. Chokalingam, Emeritus, Cardiology, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University conveyed the congratulatory message.
