Which US states are reporting cases?
The CDC’s latest surveillance data shows cases have spread across 17 states. Reports indicate that New York is currently the hardest-hit state, followed by Texas and Illinois, according to USA Today. Cases have also been recorded in the following countries:

What causes the epidemic?

People infected with Cyclospora may develop symptoms within two to 14 days after consuming contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include:

- Loss of appetite
- Bloating and gas

If left untreated, symptoms may last for several weeks and may even return after a temporary improvement.
Why are experts worried?
Although no deaths were reported, at least 20 patients required hospitalization. The outbreak is unusual because most infected people had not recently traveled outside the United States, indicating that the source of the contamination was domestic.
Public health experts say Cyclospora infections generally increase in the spring and summer, with outbreaks often linked to fresh produce such as cilantro, basil, lettuce and berries from previous years.
