Australians warned over Turkey travel after ISIS terror plot foiled

Australians wishing to travel to Türkiye are being warned to exercise extreme caution after 115 suspected ISIS members were arrested by Turkish authorities for planning attacks on Christmas and New Year celebrations.

In response, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued a new warning to Australians considering traveling to Türkiye.

In the latest update on Smartraveller.gov.au, it was stated that “The risk of terrorist attacks increases in places where large gatherings are held, including New Year’s celebrations.”

Smartraveller also said that the possible targets of terrorist attacks are tourist areas, transportation networks, shopping malls, hotels, places of worship and diplomatic areas in Türkiye.

In the updated travel warning, it was stated, “Be careful of potential threats, especially in places frequented by foreigners. Avoid crowds, do not attract attention and be aware of your surroundings.”

Turkish authorities dealt a blow to the ISIS terrorist network by raiding 124 points on Christmas day, upon the tip they received.

The arrests came just days after the Trump administration launched major attacks on ISIS fighters and infrastructure in neighboring Syria in retaliation for an ambush that killed two US soldiers and an American translator.

U.S. Central Command said it had hit a staggering 70 targets in locations in central Syria with fighter jets, attack helicopters and artillery.

The US doubled down on Boxing Day and hit more ISIS targets, this time in Nigeria.

US President Donald Trump praised the strikes as successful against the “ISIS Terrorist Scum”.
