Fuel crisis. Industry lobbying counters national interest

Australia’s fuel reserves are more important than ever as supplies from the Middle East remain uncertain. What is fraud?

The fraud was reported by the Australian Petroleum Institute (AIP) He convinced the Senate that we didn’t need much. This happened in 2014/15, during the Senate inquiry into ‘Australia’s transport energy resilience and sustainability’.

AIP is a fuel industry lobby group that told the Senate: “The maintenance of emergency stockpiles for Australia at any level above normal commercial requirements cannot be justified on energy security grounds…”

AIP members include Ampol, Mobil, BP and Geelong refinery operator Viva, and politicians, especially ministers, like to hear from well-funded industry lobby groups. They bring their expertise to Canberra to share, along with grants and other benefits.
