The Lok Sabha was adjourned the day after the motion. The Lower House witnessed multiple adjournments amid Opposition protests as Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi was once again prevented from quoting former Army chief MM Naravane’s unpublished memoirs on the India-China conflict.
Congress members protested against President KP Tenneti, urging other members to speak before the LoP completed his speech.
Before this, the President asked Mr. Gandhi not to deviate but continue the President’s speech. “The conflict between China and the US is the most talked about issue globally. This is reflected in both the Budget and the President’s speech,” Mr Gandhi said.
Mr. Gandhi also added that there is a conflict between India and China. The President then moved on to other speakers. When none of the opposition benches spoke, he called Harish Balayogi of the NDA ally Telugu Desam Party. That’s when members of Congress stepped up their protests.
Mr Gandhi confirmed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (February 3) a copy of an article referring to the unpublished ‘memoir’ of former Army chief Naravane. When asked to speak on the Motion of Thanks, he quoted the Speaker’s decision of Monday 2 February and confirmed the copy of the article. “I confirmed it,” he said.
To verify the accuracy of a document, the member must provide a signed copy certifying that it is accurate to the best of their knowledge. Mr. Tenneti, who presided over the parliament, asked him to put the issue on the table and said, “We will examine it and come back.”
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Speaker Om Birla had made up his mind and Mr Gandhi was misleading. Mr. Rijiju said he had conveyed the government’s stand to KC Venugopal and Gaurav Gogoi.
Previously, the Lower House had been adjourned until 15:00, before that until 14:00, and before that until noon; While the Parliament was hearing various motions, the Opposition continued its protests.
On Monday, January 2, Mr Gandhi was prevented from responding to Tejasvi Surya’s accusations against the Congress party using extracts from former Army chief MM Naravane’s unpublished memoirs.
