Police officers are given English lessons after concerns about the standards of young recruitment. Probation officials in Scotland will receive extra reading and writing training, which includes guidance for more clear speaking for reducing statements, reports writing and daily communication. This will be provided by Semper Scotland, representing the Ethnic Minority officials in the Department of Criminal Justice Services and Scotland.
Classes have a major decline in applications to join the UK force, as registrations have fallen 1,273 in the last two years. This led to increasing concerns about the standards of the young civil servants who participated in Scotland. This follows a workshop called English for the speakers of other languages attended by about 50 civil servants in June 2023. The same class has been made five more times since then.
Scottish Conservative Shadow Justice Secretary Liam Kerr said: “When the number of civil servants decreased significantly, there is a concern about the standard and caliber of the candidates among the high -ranking and senior officers.
“Although it is very important that the force reflects modern society, the Scots will be concerned that the taxpayer money is spent on these courses and they will feel that an acceptable English level should be obtained before being described as a civil servant.
“The continuous inadequacy of SNP Police Scotland continues to have serious consequences, and it is time for them to give them the fact that the power is facing the fact that they are confronted and they needed the resources they need.”
