Tony Burke ushers in local content quotas for streamers

Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party have promised to implement local content quotas by the 2022 election. It took the government a full term, but the promise is finally being fulfilled.
The bill, which will be introduced to the federal parliament this week, would require video broadcasters with more than 1 million local subscribers to invest 10% of their spending (or 7.5% of their revenue) in local screen production.
“We have Australian content requirements for free television and pay television, but until now there’s been no guarantee we’ll be able to see our own stories on streaming services,” Arts Minister Tony Burke said when announcing the policy yesterday.
