Weather warnings will come into effect at 01:00 on Monday, June 22 and will end at 23:59 on Tuesday, June 23. The Met Office warned that “warm weather developing into Monday and Tuesday is likely to cause widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.” The Met Office has extended its Amber extreme heat warning to cover much of east Wales and the Midlands, now alongside southern England and south-east Wales. Weather forecasters have also increased their temperature forecasts; The highest temperature on Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to be 35°C, increasing confidence that the UK’s June temperature record of 35.6°C, set in Southampton in 1976, could be broken.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: “Some areas in the south and south-east of England will meet the heatwave criteria over the weekend with temperatures possible as low as 30 degrees Celsius, the heat will expand and intensify at the beginning of next week, leading to potential impacts when combined with high temperatures and high humidity overnight.

Temperatures are expected to reach 32°C on Monday and rise to 35°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Temperatures are expected to drop slightly on Thursday, with the maximum temperature of 34°C confined to the south-east of England. Importantly, the high humidity will also mean it will be closer, hotter and more uncomfortable for many.

“Tropical nights where temperatures do not drop below 20°C are also likely for some, particularly in urban areas.”

Heatwave conditions are expected to continue into next week and spread to many other parts of England and Wales, the Met Office said, with the yellow warning set to be updated as confidence in the duration of the hot weather increases.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday, but forecasters expect these to be localized and warm conditions to persist.

The UK Health Safety Agency has also issued a series of Yellow and Amber Heat Health Alerts covering affected areas of the country.

The warnings warn of potential impacts on health and social care services, particularly for vulnerable people, as temperatures and humidity rise.

The combination of high daytime temperatures and exceptionally warm nights can increase health risks during a heatwave, the Met Office said.

Authorities are urging people to take precautions and pay attention to those most at risk.

More weather warnings are expected to be issued as confidence increases as the duration and extent of hot weather increases.
