While thefts on trains and railway premises have increased sharply, overall crimes reported by the Secunderabad Government Railway Police (GRP) have decreased by 8% in 2025, according to annual crime statistics published by GRP.

The total number of cases decreased from 2,835 in 2024 to 2,607 in 2025, indicating a decrease of 8.04%. The decline was largely due to declines in physical and other crimes; this number dropped from 1,971 cases in 2024 to 1,538 in 2025, or almost 22%. Theft cases increased from 829 cases in 2024 to 1,013 in 2025, an increase of around 22.2%.

Kidnapping cases increased from two cases in 2024 to 10 cases in 2025. Cases of harassment and crime under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act also increased by nearly 167%, from six cases to 16 cases.

However, some serious crimes showed a downward trend. Murders for gain dropped from three cases in 2024 to zero in 2025. Robbery cases decreased slightly from 14 to 13. Attempted murder cases remained unchanged at two cases in both years.

Secunderabad GRP recorded 54 cases in 2025 and arrested 70 criminals involved in drug smuggling and peddling on railway routes. GRP seized 817,824 kilograms of dried cannabis. Additionally, 80 kilograms of jaggery, 20 kilograms of alum and 101.25 liters of whiskey used to make illicit liquor were also seized.

The year also witnessed a rise in child rescue operations. A total of 500 children were rescued in 2025, compared to 84 in 2024; this was a significant increase in the number of boys rescued from 59 to 425, an increase of approximately 495%.

Accidental deaths fell from 735 in 2024 to 629 in 2025, a decrease of 14.4%. Deaths by suicide on railroad property fell from 630 to 529, a drop of 16%, while natural deaths fell from 206 to 159, a drop of nearly 23%. Railways Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepti said, “Deaths constitute a significant number of complaints around 50% for each of the GRP police stations. However, deaths have reduced this year, which is a welcome change.” he said.

Despite the increase in thefts, property recovery has improved. The value of recovered property increased from ₹ 43.17 lakh in 2024 to ₹ 47.22 lakh in 2025, recording an improvement of over 9%, but the value of lost property also increased during the year to ₹ 4.89 crore compared to ₹ 3.74 crore in 2024.

“Focus on dismantling criminal networks is our priority. We have created crime database containing all GRPs to track repeat offenders. We are constantly working to update the criminal networks database,” said Ms. Deepti.
